Padise Monastery before the St. George’s Night Uprising (1343)

e have scanty knowledge of the history, daily life and buildings of the Padise Monastery in the written records during approximately two and a half century. There is a short mention in the chronicles that in the course of the St. George’s Night Uprising in 1343 the peasants from Harju county killed 28 monks and burnt the buildings. No other tragic events are known to have happened before the Livonian War.

Before the St. George’s Night Uprising the monastery consisted probably of several small buildings, which were scattered over a larger area than the later fortified monastic complex. The majority of the earlier buildings were, most likely, built of wood. The remains of a large stone building were discovered underneath the western range of later origin.
